The Memory Stays
"This is the room where we worshiped and played our instruments and where I have beaten my children," explains Mr. M.. He is a retired teacher and a musician who plays the violin in the living room. He used to be over 20 years abusive against his family. In 2003 a tragic traffic accident occurred in which he hit deadly a neighbors child with his car, marked a turning point in the whole family's life. At the court, he was acquitted. The child suddenly crossed the street by bike, and Mr. M. couldn't stop his car anymore.
Immediately after the accident, Mr. M. went for several years into therapy and had to question his beliefs and his perceptions fundamentally. Since then, he talks with his family about his abusive behavior and what he had done to support the family's healing process.
